Since 2016, 3 out of 4 people who died from opioids in Canada were men. Of the men who had jobs when they died, 30% to 50% worked in a trade.
42% of men who went to the hospital for opioid use also had mental health issues. But their friends and family often don’t know they need help.
For example, toxic drug poisoning deaths in BC were 6 times higher among First Nations people than other residents (Jan - June 2023). The lasting impacts and trauma of colonization are a key reason. Another is the struggle to access culturally sensitive healthcare.
Friends and family might not know they need help. We need to be kind, understanding and offer support. To help us do this, it is important to learn about opioid harms and support resources.
People can get better when they have access to treatment and support.
